Bluejays Capture fifth win in last six matches
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team captured their fifth win in their last six matches with a 4-3 victory over South Dakota on Tuesday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 9-4 on the year with the win, while South Dakota fell to 7-11 overall.
Creighton started Tuesday's action with doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Kate Krueger and Sarah Wilcox made quick work of South Dakota's Bea Havlickova and Natka Kmoskova, 6-1, at the No. 2 doubles slot, while Meredith Benson and Allison Wilcox teamed up for a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles position to give Creighton the early 1-0 lead.
Creighton picked up an extra point with a win by default at the No. 6 single, while Benson continued her winning ways with a 6-3, 6-0 straight-sets win at the No. 5 singles slot to get the Bluejays out to a 3-0 lead.
South Dakota earned their first point of the match as Bea Havlickova topped Wilcox 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles position to make the score 3-1.
Sophomore Malvika Shukla then clinched the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph at the No. 4 singles spot for the Bluejays. Shukla has now won six straight single matches and eight of her last 10 this spring.
With the match already in-hand, the Coyotes captured victories at the top two singles to close the match.
"It was two teams battling with some starters out in a few positions," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We were able to squeak it out and win a close one. I like our effort once again and we will need strong mental and physical efforts this weekend in our conference matches."
The Bluejays return to the courts this weekend when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to take on BIG EAST conference foe Marquette. First serve between the Bluejays and Golden Eagles is set for 5 p.m. on Friday, April 1.
