New York, N.Y. -- Creighton Baseball's Dominic Cancellieri was named as the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday, April 11 after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the Bluejays 12-1 triumph over Georgetown on Saturday, April 9.
Â
Cancellieri, a sophomore transfer from Notre Dame, lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth inning to a Ubaldo Lopez single. The right hander finished the day to a standing ovation from the Charles Schwab Field crowd with a final line of one earned run surrendered on two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings of work.
Â
Backed by a strong showing from the Bluejay offense Saturday, the start notched Cancellieri his third win of the season (3-1) with a 4.35 ERA across 39.1 innings of work in eight starts while holding opposing batters to a .220 average and striking out 39.
Â
Cancellieri's eight punch outs tied his career best, a high he set in a similar outing on March 6 against St. Thomas as he surrendered no runs and just one hit through 5.1 innings of work in the win.
Â
Junior Jared Wegner also claimed BIG EAST honors earning a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for his performance at the plate across four games last week.
Â
Across the four-game stretch Wegner batted a team-best .588 with nine RBI, slugging .941 and posting a .600 on-base percentage. The Bluejays home run leader launched his seventh and eighth homers of the season in the series sweep of Georgetown. Wegner kicked off his hot week with a valiant 4-for-5 effort in Tuesday's loss at Kansas State.
Â
The Kearney native was also integral to the Bluejays BIG EAST opening sweep of Georgetown on the weekend, tallying two plus RBI in each of the three games, including four in Sunday's 14-2 blowout of the Hoyas.
Â
Creighton (18-8, 3-0) travels to Lincoln in search of a season-sweep of their in-state rival Nebraska on Tuesday, April 12. The Bluejays downed the Huskers 3-2 at Charles Schwab Field on March 29 in their first meeting this season. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. and the game can be broadcast on BTN+.
