Katherine Lemke finishes one shot out of first place
ELKHORN, Neb. -- Freshman Katherine Lemke finished second to lead the Creighton women's golf team to a fourth-place finish at Stampede at the Creek on Tuesday, April 12. The eight-team tournament was competed at The Club at Indian Creek in the Omaha suburb of Elkhorn, Neb.
Lemke led all players with a first round 70 and entered Tuesday's final round two shots off the lead after an even-par 144 through 36 holes. The freshman battled back from a three-shot deficit early in the final round to claim a one-shot lead with three holes to play.
But Lemke's title hopes faded when she posted a double-bogey on Black Bird No. 7 for the second straight day, which combined with a birdie by eventual medalist Mia Seeman of South Dakota State, provided a monumental three shot swing that was too much to overcome. Lemke had a birdie opportunity from 22 feet on No. 18 but ran her putt past the hole, while Seeman overcame a wayward drive to tap in for bogey and secure the victory.
The tournament was Lemke's third top-five finish this season, all of which have taken place in the Omaha metro. She had tied for fifth place in the fall version of Stampede at the Creek in October, then won the Creighton Classic a week later at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha.
Sophomore Gabby Tremblay sandwiched rounds of 79 with a second round 76 to tie for 19th place with a 234 total and her first top-20 finish of the spring. It also put her just ahead of freshman teammate Eleanor Hudepohl's second straight tie for 23rd after loops of 79, 74 and 83.
Junior Katie Allen started with circuits of 79 and 77 before a final round 85 in windy conditions and finish in a tie for 30th.
Sophomore Katie Berrian, who authored rounds of 73 and 74 on Monday and stood in fourth place after 36 holes, did not compete in Tuesday's final round due to illness. Berrian had CU's only eagle of the week, shooting a 2 on Black Bird No. 9 in her second round.
Also competing for CU as an individual but not counting toward CU's team finish was sophomore Claire Orcutt (77-82-81) in a tie for 27th place as well as junior Katie Wilson (81-87-92). Wilson finished in a tie for 48th place with her total of 260.
Seeman fired rounds of 71, 69 and 77 for a 217 total and a one-shot victory over Lemke, topping the field of 53 competitors for her first collegiate victory.
South Dakota State also won the team title with a +22 total of 886, which was eight shots better than runner-up South Dakota. Green Bay placed third with a 918 total, two shots ahead of Creighton. Eight teams competed in the event, which was contested on the Red Feather and Black Bird courses at Indian Creek, which played to a par 72 layout on the 5,988 yard course.
The Bluejays return to competition on April 21-23 at the BIG EAST Championships, which will be contested at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., this spring.
