Seventh Inning Rally Falls Short In 5-4 Setback at UConn

The Bluejays scored three runs with two-outs in the top of the seventh.
STORRS, Conn. – The Creighton softball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh to pull within a single run but fell 5-4 to UConn on Friday night at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
The Bluejays dropped to 4-7 in BIG EAST play and 14-15 overall, while UConn improve to 11-2 during league action and 22-13 on the year.
Creighton opened the scoring in the top of the first as junior Kailey Wilson launched her sixth home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Bluejays a 1-0.
The Huskies answered with a pair of runs of their own on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 2-1 lead after one complete inning.
Both teams would remain scoreless over the next four and a half innings before UConn was able to plate three runs on a hit, two walks and two errors in the bottom half of the sixth to extend their lead out to 5-1.
Down to their final out in the top of the seventh, senior Shayna Dahlen hit a towering home run over the left field wall to cut the deficit down to 5-2. Junior Brittney Manthie kept things going by drawing a walk before Madeline Vejvoda singled to right to place runners on first and second. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen cut it to a one run game with a two-run single to right field. Nielsen was able to advance to second on the play on an error by the right fielder but was unable to score as the Huskies were able to record the final out.
Wilson led the Bluejays with a pair of hits, including a double, home run and a walk to extend her on-base streak out to 17 straight games. Dahlen, Vejvoda and Nielsen also collected a hit for the Bluejays.
Kate Mullally was tagged with the loss after allowing just one run on seven hits in five innings of work. Elise Sokolsky earned her 13th win of the year, with nine strikeouts and two hits allowed in five innings of work.
The Bluejays will be back in action tomorrow for game two of the series against UConn. First pitch has been moved back to 4 p.m. CT with the forecast of rain in the Storrs area tomorrow morning.
