Scouting Creighton (0-0-0)
Coming off a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2021, the Bluejays have a renewed energy within the program. Eight starters from a squad that upset #10 Missouri State in the opening round return, while 23 letterwinners from last season are back in Omaha.
Headlining the returners are captains Paul Kruse and Mark O'Neil. A fifth-year senior in goal, Kruse brings 50 matches of experience and better than 4,600 minutes in the net for the Bluejays. O'Neil will anchor the back line for the Bluejays after logging 1,298 minutes last season.
The Creighton offense will need to replace back-to-back BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Diego Gutierrez, but head coach Johnny Torres believes the team will benefit from having multiple weapons in 2021.
One key addition is the Junior College National Player of the Year from Iowa Western, Giorgio Probo. The midfielder displayed a knack for finding his teammates in scoring position in the preseason.
Scouting Oakland (0-0-0)
The Grizzlies posted a 12-7-2 mark in 2021, falling 2-1 at Northern Illinois in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Oakland saw its top four scorers from last season depart, yet return leading goalkeeper Finn Jurek. The senior logged 1,154 minutes last season with an 8-3-1 record. He allowed 17 goals in 13 matches, posting a 1.33 goals against average.
In the preseason Oakland took its first match, 1-0, against Saginaw Valley State. The Grizzlies, however, were shutout in battles with Ohio State and Akron last weekend to close the exhibition season.
