Omaha, Neb. -- Coming off a pair of impressive wins over Oakland (6-0 on Aug. 25) and Rutgers (6-1 on Aug. 28) to start the 2022 season, Creighton junior Duncan McGuire and sophomore Mark O'Neill collected individual recognition, claiming the BIG EAST's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards on Monday, Aug. 29.
McGuire rounded out a record setting weekend with five goals and one assist in two matches to lead the nation in points (11) and goals scored (5). In the season opener McGuire set the facility record at Morrison Stadium with seven points on three goals and one assist in Creighton's 6-0 win over Oakland. McGuire assisted on the Bluejays' second goal, then scored the third, fourth and fifth goals in the match. Three days later McGuire tallied a pair of goals in the Bluejays' 6-1 win over Rutgers.
The goals alone tied a Morrison Stadium record for points, but McGuire's evening began with an assist. The combined seven points set a new facility mark, surpassing a quartet of Bluejays with six points (Ethan Finlay, Byron Dacy, Julian Nash and Brian Biggerstaff).
Â
O'Neill anchored the Bluejays back line to stifle Oakland (an NCAA Tournament team in 2021), limiting the Grizzlies to two shots. Against Rutgers on Sunday, O'Neill not only helped hold the Scarlet Knights to just one goal on 10 shots, he also blasted a highlight reel goal from 35 yards out. O'Neill's strike bested Puerto Rican national team goalkeeper Aurie Briscoe to give the Bluejays a 3-0 edge near halftime.
McGuire, O'Neil and the rest of the Creighton squad return to action on Friday, Sept. 2 as the Bluejays host Saint Louis at 6:30 p.m.
