#17 Volleyball Rallies Late To Win Five Setter at Omaha

Creighton plays third five-set match in four days
OMAHA, Neb. --Â The No. 17 Creighton Volleyball team survived a scare from crosstown rival Omaha, using big comebacks in the second and fifth sets in a 3-2 victory over the host Mavericks on Saturday afternoon at Baxter Arena.
Scores of the match in favor of Creighton (7-2) were 29-31, 25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 15-13.
The first set was a battle, with Creighton not taking its first lead until going ahead 24-23 on a combo block from Kiara Reinhardt and Kendra Wait. CU had four chances at set point, and UNO two of its own, before a Maverick block on set point gave the hosts a 31-29 victory in the opener. Creighton hit .175 in the first set as Keeley Davis had six kills, and freshman Sky McCune paced a Bluejay defense that had 30 digs with nine of her own. UNO was led by seven kills by McKenna Ruch, 18 assists from Sami Clarkson and 12 digs and five kills by Shayla McCormick.

The second set was a back-and-forth battle before UNO pulled away to take a 23-20 lead late. Creighton answered via a 5-0 run behind the service line from Kendra Wait, getting two kills from Norah Sis and a pair of Davis blocks to tie the match heading into intermission. Creighton hit .324 in the second set as Sis had seven kills.
Creighton never trailed in the third set, hitting .444 to cruise to a 25-14 victory. The Jays quickly built a 7-1 lead on Allison Whitten's serve and were never threatened. Wait dished 12 sets as Sis (4), Ava Martin (3), Kiara Reinhardt (2), Davis (2) and Kiana Schmitt (2) all had multiple kills in the frame. UNO hit just .088 against CU's stingy floor defense.
UNO (4-3) hit .406 in the fourth set to extend the match. CU led 20-19 before the Mavericks reeled off the next five points to build a 24-20 advantage. The Jays saved three set points before falling on a service error. The set featured 11 ties and three lead changes.
UNO surged to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set and the Mavericks led 8-5 when the teams flipped benches. An 8-4 run saw Creighton take its first lead of the set at 13-12 on a kill from Reinhardt. With the score tied at 13, Sis put down her 22nd kill, then followed with a solo stuff to seal the win, as the Bluejays remained unbeaten in Division I matches against UNO. Sis had four kills, five digs and the solo block on match point in the fifth set. McCormick had five kills but was set on 15 of UNO's 32 swings in the finale.
Sis led Creighton with 21 kills on .293 hitting, also adding 13 digs and a pair of stuffs. Joining her with a double-double was Davis (13 kills, 16 digs, three aces) and Wait (58 assists, 12 digs). Schmitt notched double-figure kills (11) for the second straight day, while Martin generated a season-high 13 spikes. McCune finished the day with 20 digs. As a team, Creighton hit .293 and had 70 kills, four aces, 84 digs and 12.0 blocks.
UNO was led by 21 kills and 20 digs by McCormick, and Marriah Buss also added 21 kills. Clarkson dished 60 assists to go with 11 digs and Ruch tallied 18 kills on .400 hitting in 35 swings. The Mavericks had 74 kills, five aces, 76 digs and 12.0 blocks on .224 hitting overall.
This week's stretch marked the first time since early the 2020 season (in the spring of 2021) that Creighton played three consecutive five set matches.
Creighton closes its grueling non-conference schedule next weekend in Houston, Texas, at the Rice Adidas Invitational II. The Bluejays face Kansas State on Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. before taking on host Rice on Sunday at 1 p.m.
