Bluejay Men's Soccer Opens BIG EAST Action With Connecticut on Saturday

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Men's Soccer opens BIG EAST play on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Morrison Stadium against Connecticut. Last season the Bluejays and Huskies played to a 2-2 draw in Storrs, Conn. During Saturday's contest Creighton Athletics will honor the 2000 Men's Soccer team that reached the NCAA Championship match against Connecticut.

Series History: Creighton leads Connecticut, 2-1-1
The Bluejays and Huskies have met four times previously, including a historic
matchup in the NCAA Championship match in 2000. Saturday will mark just the second meeting in Omaha and this first time the two have met in Morrison Stadium during the regular season. The first three battles came in the NCAA Tournament, while last season the was the first meeting as BIG EAST foes.

Scouting Creighton (3-1-2)
The Bluejays were exceptional in the preseason and opening week of 2022, scoring 11 goals in three preseason matches and 12 in the opening two contests of the year.
Since the 6-1 win over Rutgers on Aug. 28, the Bluejays' attack has slowed, delivering five goals over its last three matches.
Creighton's momentum is on the rise once more following a 1-1 draw with No. 2 Stanford on Sept. 9 and a 6-1 win over Omaha on Sept. 14.
Duncan McGuire leads the Bluejay offense with 14 points on six goals and two assists, but five Bluejays' have at least two goals. In addition to McGuire, Jackson Castro and Owen O'Malley have five and four goals respectively.
Senior Paul Kruse was spectacular in the Bluejays' 1-1 draw with Stanford, collecting five saves including a pair of one-on-one situations. On the season Kruse has limited the opposition to seven goals in six matches (1.36 GAA) and made 11 saves.
Scouting Connecticut (2-3-0)
The Huskies enter Saturday's contest with consecutive losses to Syracuse (5-0 on Sept. 5) and Rhode Island (3-1 on Sept. 10). Connecticut's best performance of the season came against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Sept. 2 in a 3-1 win.
Mateo Leveque leads Connecticut with six points (one goal and four assists) this season, while both Soren Ilsoe and Moussa Wade have two goals to pace the Huskies.
In the net Connecticut played freshman Jayden Hibbert for four matches, yet grad student Michael Stone was in goal in the Huskies' loss to Rhode Island. Hibbert has allowed nine goal in four matches, a 2.25 GAA. Stone, meanwhile, gave up three goals in his only action of the season.
NCAA Runner-Up Team in 2000 Honored During Match with Connecticut
The 2000 Creighton team that advanced to the NCAA Championship match against Connecticut will be honored as the Bluejays face off with the Huskies on Sept. 17 in the BIG EAST opener.
During the 2000 season the Bluejays led the NCAA with 22 victories, setting the Creighton record with a 22-4-0 final mark. Creighton reached the NCAA Championship match by knocking off two-time defending national champion Indiana 2-1 in triple overtime.
Before the meeting with the Hoosiers, Creighton posted three straight road shutout victories over No. 12 Ohio State (1-0), No. 3 San Diego (3-0) and Virginia (3-0).
Offensively the 2000 team got 18 goals and 13 assists from future MLS First Rounder Brian Mullan. Creighton Hall of Famer Mike Tranchilla delivered 19 goals and nine assists, while current Bluejay assistant coach MIchael Gabb set a Creighton record with 2,279 minutes in goal. That season Gabb allowed just 26 goals in 25 matches, making 96 saves, still the fourth-highest total in school history. Â
Bluejays Scoring Near Record Pace
With 23 goals in six matches, the 2022 team is averaging 3.83 goals per game. The Bluejay record for goals in a single season came in 1980 as Creighton posted 79 goals in 20 matches (3.9 per contest).
Last season the Bluejays closed 2021 with 29 goals in 19 matches, while Creighton scored 22 goals in both 2019 and 2020.
Creighton In Conference Openers
Since joining the BIG EAST prior to the 2013 season, Creighton is 7-2-0 during the first conference match of the season, including a 2-1 loss to No. 1 Georgetown last season.
Creighton is 8-1-0 during the first home BIG EAST match of the season. The Bluejays own a 47-26-8 record during regular-season BIG EAST contests.
All-time the Bluejays are 20-6-5 in conference openers and 26-3-2 in home conference openers.

The Bluejays have captured two BIG EAST regular-season titles (2014, 2018) and finished runner-up at the conference tournament twice (2015, 2016).
