Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton Men's Soccer team battled lightning, hail, showers and a more than a 23-hour delay in their match with Connecticut, closing the contest with a 1-1 draw on Sunday, September 18.
Following Sunday's outcome the Bluejays are 3-1-3 on the season and 0-0-1 in BIG EAST play, while Connecticut moved to 2-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference.
The match between Creighton and Connecticut began on Saturday, September 17 at 6:34 p.m. (CT). In the eighth minute of play (7:16) the Bluejays claimed a 1-0 lead as sophomore Owen O'Malley delivered an unassisted goal by besting a quartet of Husky defenders.
Moments later the skies opened up with a downfall of rain, but the two teams played on until lightning within the area halted play with just under 13 minutes into the match (12:59). A required 30-minute delay was reset with each strike within the 8-mile radius. After waiting nearly three hours the two teams agreed to suspend play and restart on Sunday at 6:34 p.m.
When play resumed the Huskies found the equalizer in the 21st minute, getting the second goal of the season from Frantz Pierrot. Connecticut's Scott Testori earned an assist as his deflected shot set Pierrot's strike up.
The two teams went back and forth over the final 70 minutes, with neither able to surge ahead.
Creighton closed the match with a 10-9 edge in shots, while the Bluejays held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday, September 24 in the Bluejays' first match outside of Omaha this season, facing Georgetown at 12:00 p.m.
