OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton Women's Soccer's school record eight-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Thursday, Sept. 22 as the Bluejays fell to Connecticut in the BIG EAST Conference opener, 2-1.
The loss dropped Creighton to 4-1-4 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play, while Connecticut moved to 5-2-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, it was Connecticut that scratched the scoreboard first in the 51st minute. Senior Jackie Harnett sent the play into motion off a corner kick from the right side of the pitch. After bouncing off a few players the loose ball found its way to the foot of Cara Elmendorf who blasted a shot at goal. The shot deflected off the foot of a Bluejay to Jessica Mazo. Mazo gathered the ball and fired a shot into the back of the net, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Creighton pulled even in the 83rd minute as junior Peighton Steffen lofted a shot into the back of the net from roughly 35-yards out for her first goal of the season. Sophomore Greta Betz got the first opportunity for the equalizer but was blocked by a Connecticut defender. The deflection rolled out to Steffen who fired a looping shot onto goal. The backspin caused Connecticut's netminder Adyson Duran to miss played the shot as the ball bounced off the hands of Duran and into the back of the net.
Connecticut, however, would capitalize on a turnover by the Bluejays in the Huskies attacking third to find the back of the net just three minutes later. Junior Jada Konte intercepted a pass from Bluejay goalkeeper Keelan Terrell before finding senior Cara Jordan on the right side of the 6-yard box for a goal, giving the Huskies a 2-1 win.
The final stats showed Creighton holding a 16-11 edge in shots, while each team earned three corner kicks. Duran earned the win after securing five saves in her first start in net.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 25 as Creighton travels to #23 Georgetown to battle the Hoyas at 12 p.m.
