#22 Volleyball Sweeps Georgetown in BIG EAST Opener

Creighton hits .374 and serves up 10 aces
OMAHA, Neb. -- No. 22 Creighton Volleyball never trailed in a dominating 3-0 win over Georgetown in the BIG EAST opener for both teams on Friday, Sept. 23.
Scores of the match in favor of Creighton (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) were 25-13, 25-10, 25-11 as the Bluejays needed just 76 minutes to win its ninth straight league lid-lifter.
Kendra Wait had 34 assists and 11 digs for her sixth straight double-double and set a Bluejay offense that hit .374 on the night. Norah Sis had 11 kills on .346 hitting and Ava Martin came off the bench to hit .533 and amass 10 kills over the final two sets. Nine Bluejays had a kill, eight had a dig, seven had an assist and six women owned an ace in the match. Creighton finished with 51 kills, 10 aces, 57 digs and three blocks on .374 hitting.
Georgetown (2-10, 0-1 BIG EAST) was led by seven kills and 14 digs from Mary Grace Goyena. The Hoyas finished with 18 kills, two aces, 39 digs and 8.5 blocks on .061 hitting overall.
Sis got off to a great start with seven kills, while senior Kiana Schmitt terminated all four swings in the first set. CU raced to a 6-1 lead that grew to 17-8. An ace from Keeley Davis closed out the set one win as CU hit .390 and Allison Whitten had nine of her match-high 19 digs.
Martin made an immediate impact in the second set, with a kill on all six of her swings. Three straight aces by Ellie Bolton pushed the Bluejay margin to 6-1 and Creighton later moved ahead 18-6. A kill from senior Bethany Clapp helped CU take a 2-0 lead into intermission. Creighton authored seven aces in the second set as five different Bluejays had at least one service winner.
Creighton bolted to leads of 5-1 and 13-3 in the final frame to coast to a 25-11 victory and 3-0 sweep. Four different Bluejays recorded at least one assist as Wait gave way to Jazz Schmidt after CU had built a 15-7 lead. The setter change made little difference, as CU hit .375 in the third set.
Creighton returns to the court on Sunday, Sept. 25 when it hosts Villanova at 1 p.m. in a match that will air on Nebraska Public Media and can be heard on 1180 The Zone.
