Bluejays won five singles matches to secure win No. 499 for head coach Tom Lilly
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Creighton women's tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over North Dakota on Friday afternoon at the Choice Health & Fitness Center in Grand Forks, N.D. during the Bluejays first match of the 2023 season.
With the win the Bluejays improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Fighting Hawks fall to 2-2 overall. Creighton also improves to 11-2 against North Dakota since the start of the 2010 season.
Creighton fell behind early as North Dakota started the match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn the first point of the match. Sophomore Valerie Negin and freshman Ana Paula Martinez claimed a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles position but just after the Fighting Hawks secured 6-3 and 6-4 victories.
The Bluejays responded in singles play, earning triumphs at the top four singles positions as well as the No. 6 singles slot.
Senior Kate Krueger got Creighton rolling with a 6-3, 6-0 straight sets win at the top singles position. Martinez continued the Bluejays winning ways with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot, while junior Bianca Rademacher secured her first win as a Bluejay with an identical 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 singles position to give Creighton a 3-1 lead in the match.
North Dakota cut the Bluejays advantage to 3-2 with a 6-4, 7-6 win at the No. 5 slot, before Negin clinched the win with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the No. 3 singles spot. Junior Malvika Shukla closed out the match with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 triumph at the No. 2 position.
"I feel like we have been managing this team's injuries and duct taping things together from August until now and somehow this worked out well today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "North Dakota played some good doubles, winning three or four really big points to take the early lead. I credit our ladies for fighting hard all afternoon and handling the pressure in singles."
The Bluejays are back in action on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. when they take on Air Force (0-2). The contest will take place in Grand Forks, N.D.
