Bluejay Women's Hoops Earns 68-42 Win Over Marquette

Omaha, Neb. -- Led by a committed defensive effort, the 25th ranked Creighton women's basketball team posted a 68-42 win over Marquette on Sunday, January 8.
The win pushed the Bluejays to a 10-5 on the season and 4-3 in BIG EAST action, while Marquette fell to 10-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Junior Morgan Maly (Crete, Neb.) got the Bluejays off to a fast start with the first seven points of the game, getting a pair of buckets in the paint and a trey to force a Marquette timeout (7:23). Once the Golden Eagles adjusted to defend Maly, junior Lauren Jensen (Lakeville, Minn.) made Marquette pay with seven of the Bluejays' next nine points. Creighton went on to build a 20-6 lead after one frame and never looked back.
Holding a 28-14 advantage with just over three minutes remaining in the second, the Bluejays closed the half with a 7-0 run to take a 35-14 edge into the locker room at the half. Junior Emma Ronsiek (Sioux Falls, S.D.) started the run with an elbow three-pointers, then Jensen and senior Carly Bachelor (Topeka, Kan.) closed the frame a pair of mid-range jumpers.
After a Marquette bucket to open the third, senior Rachael Saunders connected from long range. Jensen and Maly followed with a mid-range jumper and a trey to vault the Bluejays out to a 41-16 advantage with 5:54 remaining in the third.
Over the final 15 minutes Creighton maintained at least a 21-point lead to earn the decisive win.
Jensen led Creighton with 19 points, while Maly and Ronsiek finished with 10 points. Marquette's Chloe Marotta finished with 20 points in the loss, while Jordan King delivered 13 points.
The Bluejays return to the court on Wednesday, January 11 as Creighton battles Seton Hall at 8:00 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
