Lauren Jensen Surpasses 1,000-point Mark in Victory
Lincoln, Neb. -- After a frenetic first quarter that yielded 51 combined points, the 22nd ranked Creighton Women's Basketball team outlasted Nebraska 79-74 in a well played game on both sides on Sunday, November 19.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 3-1 on the season, while Nebraska fell to 3-1 overall.
A furious opening stanza saw the Bluejays knock down eight treys, finishing the quarter 8-of-13 (61.5%) from long range. Morgan Maly led Creighton's long distance calling plan with four treys, including three in the opening three minutes. While Creighton found the splash zone, Nebraska was content to pound pavement on the interior as Alexis Markowski and Natalie Potts scored in the paint almost at will. The final minute saw the Bluejays push their advantage to 28-19 (1:36) on a three-ball from Lauren Jensen, but Markowski dropped in consecutive buckets to send the game to the second quarter with Creighton leading 28-23.
Early in the second quarter the Huskers closed within one possession at 32-29 (7:23), but Emma Ronsiek rallied her troops with five consecutive points to give the Bluejays breathing room. The battle back and forth continued through the quarter. The final shot went Creighton's way this time as Jensen knocked down a fade away jumper to make it 47-40 as the teams went to their respective locker rooms.
The Bluejays found themselves mired in foul trouble in the third, helping the Huskers use a 6-0 run to pull within two at 55-53 with 3:21 on the clock. Once more Ronsiek answered the challenge, delivering back-to-back buckets to ignite a 10-1 Creighton run. Sophomore Kennedy Townsend and Jensen capped the run with six from the charity stripe to give Creighton its largest lead of the game at 65-54 with 20 seconds remaining in the third. Markowski scored for the second time in the game as the buzzer for the quarter sounded to make it 65-56 heading to the final frame.
With the Bluejays holding a 72-63 advantage with just under six minutes remaining, Nebraska mounted a final push as the Huskers closed within three at 72-69 with 3:36 remaining. This time Jensen rose to the challenge as the Minnesota native delivered a driving layup to keep Nebraska at arms length.
