#21 Women's Hoops Remains Unbeaten in Baby Blues, Downing St. John's 67-56

Omaha, Neb. -- Led by a combined 34 points from senior Lauren Jensen (Lakeville, Minn.) and sophomore Kennedy Townsend (Kansas City, Mo.), No. 21 Creighton Women's Basketball defeated St. John's 67-56 on Saturday, December 30.
Sporting Baby Blue uniforms for the second time this season (two victories) the Bluejays moved 10-2 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's fell to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Trailing 7-6 late the first quarter (2:49), Townsend made her first impact on the game by grabbing an offensive rebound and converting a traditional three-point play. After St. John's reclaimed the lead at 10-9, Jensen connected on a pair of free throws to put Creighton ahead for good at 11-10 (2:12). Jensen followed on the next possession with a driving layup, while Townsend knocked down a running three-pointer from just inside half court to give the Bluejays a 16-12 edge moving into the second quarter.
Just a few minutes into the second period, the Red Storm closed within one point at 16-15 (7:38) only to see senior Morgan Maly (Crete, Neb.) and Jensen connect on a turnaround jumper and a trey to force St. John's to use its first timeout. Leading 25-19 with just over two minutes remaining the Bluejays closed the half on an 8-4 burst getting three-pointers from seniors Molly Mogensen (Farmington, Minn.) and Emma Ronsiek (Sioux Falls, S.D.) as well a mid-range bucket by Mogensen at the buzzer to take a 33-23 lead into the locker room.
Creighton pushed its edge to a game-high 15 (40-25 with 7:05 left) courtesy of consecutive layups by senior Mallory Brake (Hastings, Minn.) and another trifecta by Jensen. The Red Storm's final push brought the contest back within single digits at 47-39 with 1:45 remaining in the third, only to see Jensen, Townsend and Mogensen connect from long range in the final two minutes to send the contest to the fourth with Creighton leading 56-41.
The Bluejays maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the final frame, extended their edge to 65-50 with 2:31 left.
Jensen led all scorers with 20 points, while Townsend contributed a career-high 14 points. Rounding out the Bluejays in double figures was senior Molly Mogensen (Farmington, Minn.) with 10 points. St. John's got 19 points from Jillian Archer, while Unique Drake added 16 points.
Creighton returns to action Wednesday, January 3 as the Bluejays face No. 15 Connecticut at 6:00 p.m. in D.J. Sokol Arena.
