About Connecticut
Scouting #21 Creighton (10-2, 1-1 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays displayed their versatility and toughness in the 67-56 win over St. John's on December 30 as two of Creighton's top three scorers had an off night.
Emma Ronsiek (18.6 ppg) and Morgan Maly (14.7 ppg) combined for 15 points on 5-for-24 (20.8%) from the field, but Lauren Jensen (17.0 ppg) delivered 20 points and sophomore Kennedy Townsend added a career-high 14 in the victory.
The Bluejays defense has held the opposition to 40% or less from the field in seven contests, all victories.
Scouting #12 Connecticut (10-3, 2-0 BIG EAST)
The Huskies dropped early road games at NC State and Texas as well as a neutral site contest to UCLA. Starter Azzi Fudd was lost in the second game of the season (NC State). The Huskies, however, have returned to the form Connecticut fans are used to with six straight wins. The last victory was a 31-point win over Marquette on December 31.
Paige Bueckers leads the way for Connecticut with 19.2 ppg, but Aaliyah Edwards is a critical force in the middle averaging 17.0 ppg and 8.5 rpg.
Defensively the Huskies are limiting opponents to 37.5% from the field. During their six-game win streak, Connecticut has an average margin of victory of 32.8 ppg.
Keys To the Game on January 3 (#12 Connecticut)
Sophomore Kennedy Townsend set career-highs with 14 points, six rebounds, 22 minutes played, field goals (five), field goals attempted (eight) and three-pointers made (three). Townsend's game kicked into high gear with a buzzer beating trey from just inside half court at the close of the first quarter.
While Under the Radar, Brake Shining in Her Role
Senior Mallory Brake is one of Creighton's most improved players this season and a large reason the Bluejays have been successful this season. Brake has led the Bluejays in rebounding twice, assists twice, steals six times and blocked shots in six games. If Brake led the team in any of these categories, Creighton is 7-0 this season.
Bluejays Battle With Huskies Leans Heavy to Minnesota
Four of the ten projected starters in Wednesday's game hail from Minnesota. Connecticut's Paige Bueckers is joined by Creighton's Mallory Brake, Lauren Jensen and Molly Mogensen as all Minnesota natives. This is the first time since in over two seasons the Bluejays will see Bueckers on the floor as injuries kept her out of contests against Creighton in each of the last two seasons. It will be the first time Jensen and Bueckers will face off on the court. The duo as well as Brake were featured in a picture together on the Minnesota Tribune as part of the 2020 All-Metro Team on March 9, 2020.
