
Softball Falls To Texas A&M-Commerce in 8 Innings, 5-4, In Texan Invitational Finale

Stephenville, Texas – The Creighton softball team fell 5-4 in extra innings to Texas A&M-Commerce in the finale of the Texan Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Bluejays are now 3-6, while the Lions improved to 2-8.
Junior Cayla Nielsen went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead thee Bluejays offense, while classmate Emma Rosonke collected two hits, including a two-run home run. Junior Madeline Vejvoda also contributed a pair of hits as the Bluejays closed the game with 10 base knocks.
Texas A&M-Commerce jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, scoring on a pair of Lion hits. Elizabeth Guerrero led off the inning with a double to right center before coming around to score on an RBI single by Avery Zeigler to give Commerce an early advantage.
Creighton answered back quickly with a single run in the top of the third inning. Freshman Ensley Frame reached on an error to open the inning for the Bluejays. Classmate Lily West pushed Frame over to third with a single to right field before Vejvoda tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly down the left field line.
The Bluejays would take their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Alyssa Gappa delivered a one-out single to left to get things start for the Jays. Rosonke followed with a two-run blast over the right field wall, giving Creighton a 3-1 lead.
Refusing to back down, the Lions plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth to level the contest at 4-4. Ashlynn Griffith put scoring into motion by beating out an infield single. She then stole second before Zeigler singled to left center to put runners on the corners with one out. The Lions then executed a double steal as Griffith came home to score. Following a single by Shelby Hodge, pinch hitter Jodi De Hart delivered an RBI single through the right side to level the contest at 3-3.
Creighton regained the lead quickly as Vejvoda lined a single into center to lead off the fifth. Senior Kailey Wilson then reached on a fielder's choice, before pinch runner Elliot Smith came around to score on an RBI double to center by Nielsen.
The Bluejays lead didn't last long as Texas A&M-Commerce plated a run on an RBI single from Griffith in the bottom half of the inning.
Creighton and Texas A&M-Commerce remained scoreless through the sixth and seventh inning before the Lions secured the win with a sacrifice fly from Hodge's in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Bluejays will be back in action on Friday, February 24th when its travels to Las Cruces, N.M. for the first stage of the UTEP Invitational, co-hosted by New Mexico State. Creighton kicks off the event with a pair of contests against New Mexico and New Mexico State in Las Cruces on Friday before heading to El Paso to take on Kansas City, UTEP and Tarleton State on Saturday and Sunday.
