#19 Men's Hoops Comeback Falls Short in 73-71 Loss to #10 Marquette

Bluejays rally from 10 points down but come up just short
OMAHA, Neb. -- Tyler Kolek's go-ahead basket with 28.7 seconds left lifted No. 10 Marquette to a 73-71 road win at No. 19 Creighton on Tuesday night in front of a sold out crowd of 18,006 fans at CHI Health Center Omaha.
The Golden Eagles trailed 32-20 late in the first half, only to use a 43-21 spurt to build a 63-53 lead, then had to survive down the stretch after CU tied the game twice in the final 80 seconds.
Marquette (22-6, 14-3 BIG EAST) added to its lead in the BIG EAST standings while Creighton (18-10, 12-5 BIG EAST) fell into a tie for third place.with three league games left.
Kam Jones led Marquette with 19 points while Kolek and Oso Ighodaro each contributed 18 points for the Golden Eagles, who outscored the Jays 41-31 in the second half.
Creighton was led by 18 points and 13 rebounds from Baylor Scheierman, who logged his 11th double-double of the season. Ryan Nembhard (16) and Ryan Kalkbrenner (12) also scored in double-figures for CU.
The host Bluejays used an 11-3 surge to open its largest lead of the game at 32-20 with just under five minutes left in the first half. Scheierman scored the first five points in the flurry before back-to-back three-pointers by Trey Alexander and Nembhard prompted a timeout from MU coach Shaka Smart. The Bluejays took a 40-32 lead into the half after Scheierman's step back three-pointer in the final minute.
Marquette scored the first eight points of the second half and would eventually take a 51-50 lead on two foul shots by Kolek at the 13:38 mark. A dunk by Fredrick King put CU ahead 53-50 with 12:09 left before the Jays missed seven straight shots while MU took control with a 13-0 burst and a 63-53 lead with 7:59 remaining.
Creighton's got the crowd back into it with a 7-0 run to draw within 63-60 with 3:10 left. A three-point play from Nembhard trimmed CU's deficit to two (67-65) with 2:11 left and a driving lay-up by Scheierman tied the score at 67 with 1:19 left.
Kolek took over down the stretch, hitting a floater with 58.4 left to give MU a 69-67 lead. Nembhard sank two foul shots with 41.6 left to tie it, only to have Kolek's eventual game-winner fall over the outstretched hand of 7-foot-1 Kalkbrenner with 28.7 seconds to go.
CU had a chance to take the lead with 15 seconds left but Alexander's go-ahead trifecta try rimmed out and Jones controlled the rebound for MU. He made both with 9.3 seconds left to put Marquette up four. CU drew within two on Kalkbrenner's putback with 1.9 left. Jones would be fouled with 1.7 seconds left and missed both, and Scheierman's 65-foot heave while trying to initiate contact as time expired fell well short.
Marquette shot 48.3 percent from the field and outscored CU 46-30 in the paint. The Golden Eagles also had 10 steals, including five from Stevie Mitchell.
Creighton made 10-of-28 three-pointers (35.7 percent) and 26-of-54 field goal attempts (48.1 percent) overall. The Jays won the rebound battle 34-32 and outscored MU 15-2 off the bench.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. Central when it visits Villanova (14-14, 8-9 BIG EAST) in a game that will be televised nationally on FOX. The contest can also be heard on 1620 The Zone and 101.9 The Keg.
