Creighton hosts Georgetown on Wednesday
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 18 points and surpassed 1,000 in his career, but it wasn't enough as No. 19 Creighton lost to Villanova 79-67 on Saturday, Feb. 25 inside Wells Fargo Center in downtown Philadlphia.
Villanova (15-14, 9-9 BIG EAST) won for the fifth time in its last six games, while Creighton (18-11, 12-6 BIG EAST) lost its second game of the week after a 9-1 stretch.
The host Wildcats took control early, using a 29-10 run to build a 37-20 lead. Freshman reserve Mark Armstrong had five points and Eric Dixon added 10 of his 18 first half points to help the Wildcats pull away. Not even Ryan Kalkbrenner's 1,000th career point late in that run was enough to pull the Jays out of their offensive skid. Villanova would take a 38-22 lead into the half behind 7-of-13 three-point shooting that included 4-of-5 marksmanship from deep by Dixon.
Kalkbrenner led CU in the first half with nine points.Creighton made just 2-of-13 three-pointers in the opening half, missing its final 10 attempts from downtown before the break.
Down 17 early in the second half, CU used an 11-3 run to trim its deficit to nine (49-40) on a three-point play from Kalkbrenner. The Jays drew within seven (52-45) on a pair at the charity stripe by Kalkbrenner, which also drew the third foul on Dixon, before the Nova big man buried his sixth trey of the contest from the left corner following an offensive rebound. Dixon then pushed past his previous career-high with a three-point play to put the Cats back up by a baker's dozen with 11:18 left as part of an 8-0 run.
In addition to Kalkbrenner, Arthur Kaluma added a team-leading 18 points and Scheierman contributed 10.
Dixon led Nova with a career-high 31 points, making 11-of-15 shots from the floor and 6-of-8 tries from downtown. Cam Whitmore scored 17 points for VU.
