Women’s Tennis Overpowers Georgetown, 6-1, in BIG EAST Opener

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team overpowered Georgetown in a 6-1 victory in the BIG EAST opener on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 8-1 on the year and 1-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas fell to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Georgetown took an early advantage in singles play with a 7-5 victory at the top doubles position before the Bluejays rallied for wins at both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Down 4-3 on both the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, the Bluejays won 16 of the last 18 points, including 14 consecutive points to rally for the doubles win. Valerie Negin and Ana Paula Martinez captured a 7-6 win on court No. 2, while Bianca Rademacher and Kate Krueger claimed a 7-5 triumph on the No. 3 doubles court to give Creighton a 1-0 lead in the match.
Junior Malvika Shukla continued her winning ways with her 12th straight singles win dating back to the fall season with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-sets victory over Avantika Willy at the top singles position to give Creighton a 2-0 edge.
Sophomore Valerie Negin pushed the Bluejays advantage out to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 straight-sets win at the No. 4 singles slot, while Rademacher clinched the overall dual with a 7-6, 6-2 triumph at the No. 5 singles spot.
Martinez then improved to 9-0 on the year in singles play with a three-set triumph at the No. 3 singles position. Martinez claimed the opening set 7-6 but fell in set two 6-0. In the decisive third set, Martinez scored the final four points to secure a 11-9 victory.
Graduate transfer Leanne Kendall closed out the match with a three-set win on court No. 6. After dropping the first set 6-1, Kendall rallied for a 6-3 victory in set two to force a decisive third set. Kendall then outlasted Georgetown's Morgan Coburn in the third set to earn a 6-4 win.
Georgetown's lone win of the afternoon came at the No. 2 singles position as Chloe Bendetti captured a 6-2, 7-5 win over Krueger.
Creighton will return to the courts on Sunday, February 26 at 11 a.m. for a match against DePaul at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
