Creighton ends Florida trip with a 4-1 record
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip to Florida with a 5-2 victory over Connecticut in BIG EAST action on Friday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
The win lifts the Bluejays to 12-3 on the year and 3-2 in BIG EAST play, while Connecticut fell to 7-3 overall and 1-1 league action.
Creighton dropped only one game at the top two doubles position as Malvika Shukla and Leanne Kendall cruised to a 6-0 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, while Ana Paula Martinez and Valerie Negin combined for a 6-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot to earn the first point of the match.
The Bluejays continued to dominate throughout singles play as Creighton won four of the six singles matches to claim the overall dual.
Martinez captured a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 4 singles position, while Negin claimed a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 slot to give Creighton a 3-0 advantage.
Connecticut answered with a pair of wins on the No. 1 and No. 5 singles court, before Kendall clinched the match for the Bluejays with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 singles position.
Senior Kate Krueger closed out the match with a three-set win at the No. 2 singles position. Krueger dropped the opening set 6-2 but responded with a 6-1 victory in set two before claiming a 6-3 win in the decisive third set.
"We had a long talk on Wednesday night about how we just didn't play well or compete well against Butler at enough position," said head coach Tom Lilly. "I am impressed with how the team responded today and were working hard on every court mentally and physically. Our doubles were really good today and we fought back after momentum shifts in singles much better."
Creighton returns to action on March 18 at 1 p.m. when the travel to face Wyoming in Laramie, Wy.
