Men’s Tennis Extends Winning Streak To Six With 4-3 Win Over Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Creighton men's tennis team outlasted Xavier, 4-3, to extend its winning streak to six matches at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio.
With the Bluejays improved to 6-3 on the year and 3-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since joining the league in 2013. Xavier fell to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in league play with the loss.
The Bluejays earned the first point of the match by winning the final two doubles matches. After falling in the No. 2 match, Creighton responded with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles position. Casey Ross and Matthew Lanahan combined for a 6-1 win at the top doubles spot, while Zachary Kuo and Oscar Alvarez clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 slot.
In singles play, Creighton won three of the six matches to clinch the overall dual.
Xavier evened the match at 1-1 with a win at the No. 2 singles spot, before Lanahan claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top singles position to regain a 2-1 lead for the Bluejays. Lanahan has now won his last six singles matches after starting the year 0-3.
Xavier answered with a win at the No. 4 singles position, leveling the match once again at 2-2, moments before Shin Inoue captured a 6-3, 7-6 win at the No. 5. Singles spot to give Creighton a 3-2 edge in the match.
Sophomore Alejandro Gandini then clinched the match for the Bluejays with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 three-set win over Cambell Nakayama at the No. 3 singles position.
"Another very tough match that our guys pulled out," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We played solid doubles to get the point at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions and then singles had some tricky match ups and we definitely struggled to figure out games at times. Credit to our players for never giving up and handling some tough matches against a good team."
Creighton returns to the court on Monday, March 6 when they take on Rochester at 11:30 a.m. from the USTA Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
