Bluejays fall to Xavier, 4-0
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton women's tennis season came to an end in the BIG EAST Championship match as the third-seeded Bluejays fell to the two-time defending BIG EAST champions and top-seeded Xavier, 4-0, at the BIG EAST Championships Presented by Jeep on Sunday morning.
Creighton finishes its historic season with an 17-8 record after falling for just the second time in eight neutral site matches this spring. Among the many accomplishments for the Bluejays this season were the team's first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals and finals, longest winning streak to start a season under head coach Tom Lilly and five individuals with 20 or more wins this season.
Senior Kate Krueger and junior Bianca Rademacher teamed up for their 10th doubles win of the season, taking down the Musketeer's Blessing Nwaozuzu and Paulina Franco, 6-0, at the No. 3 doubles position. Xavier, however, would take the first point of the match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions.
The Musketeer's extended their lead to 2-0 as Anna Roggenburk opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ana Paula Martinez at the No. 4 singles.
Xavier's lead continued to grow as Kat Lyman defeated Krueger, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 singles position, before Nwaozuzu clinched the Musketeer's third consecutive BIG EAST Title with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over graduate transfer Leanne Kendall at the No. 6 singles position.
"We had a good run but it came to an end today," said Lilly. "What a special ride these ladies took us on this year. I can't be more proud of a team that stuck together through a lot of injuries and rarely ever playing with a full line up that didn't have limitations due to injuries. They fought hard every time out and that is all we ever ask. I'll remember this group forever."
Sunday's match marked the final collegiate match for two Bluejays, Kate Krueger and Leanne Kendall. The duo has combined for 122 total wins with Kruger recording 89 single and double victories in her four years with the Bluejays. Kendall compiled 33 total wins in her one season with the Bluejays, after posting 74 wins during her first four seasons with Bryant.
