Andrew Meggs Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

New York, N.Y. -- Creighton senior Andrew Meggs claimed his first BIG EAST Player of the Week as the Bluejay second baseman led Creighton to a series sweep of St. John's over the weekend.
Meggs broke out of a season-long slump with nine hits in four games this week. The Bluejay leader guided Creighton to a sweep of St. John's, with the midweek game against Nebraska suspended at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Meggs went 9-for-18 (.500) with his first home run and seven RBI. Meggs shined brightest in the Bluejays' rally on Sunday with three RBI singles as Creighton overcame a 7-1 deficit to defeat the Red Storm 8-7. Meggs delivered the walk off hit in the ninth as well as RBI singles in the sixth and eighth innings. He closed the week with four runs scored, a .722 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
Meggs and the Bluejays return to action on Tuesday, April 25 when Creighton hosts UNLV in a two-game midweek series. First pitch on Tuesday night is set for 6:00 p.m.

BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Andrew Sears, UConn, Jr., LHP (West Warwick, R.I.)
In a 12-5 series opening win against Georgetown, Sears went a career-best 7.0 innings of work with a career-high 11 strikeouts. Both marks were team highs for the Huskies in 2023. The lefty retired the first 18 batters that he faced before allowing an infield single in the seventh inning. After an unearned run was scored in the top of the seventh, Sears led the Huskies defense to an 11-1 advantage. Overall he capped the game with three earned runs allowed.

BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Scott Jones, Butler, Sr., OF
Jones led Butler's offense in a series win over Seton Hall batting .471 with five runs, four RBI and a home run. He also was a perfect 12-for-12 on defensive put outs.
Luke Broadhurst, UConn, Gr., IF
Capped the week with five runs and five RBI, leading the Huskies to a conference series win over Georgetown and a win over Boston College.
Owen Carapellotti, Georgetown, So., C
Carapellotti slashed .471/.526/.941 with two home runs, a triple and eight RBI. The sophomore recorded eight hits and scored eight runs while earning two walks in four games this week. Â
Zach Camp, Villanova, Gr., RHP
Camp came in to close two of the three games he appeared in, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out six batters. Overall, he allowed just two hits and two walks, while capping the week with a 0.00 ERA.
Matt McCormick, Xavier, Sr., 1B
McCormick led Xavier's everyday players with a .545 batting average in a 3-1 week for the Musketeers. Among his six hits were three for extra bases, resulting in a 1.00 slugging percentage.
