CU leads the state's Division I Universities with 10 perfect APR scores
OMAHA, Neb. -- Ten Creighton programs have been recognized by the NCAA for having perfect multi-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores in their respective sports. Creighton's men's cross country, men's golf, men's tennis, men's track, softball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis, women's track and volleyball teams each were honored.
Creighton's 10 perfect scores led the state's Division I Universities and trailed only Villanova (12) among its BIG EAST peers. No league school owned a higher percentage of teams with a perfect APR score than Creighton's 62.5 percent.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. This is the second year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year COVID-19 hiatus. Last spring, the Division I Board of Directors approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.Â
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 academic years.
Both the Creighton women's tennis and women's cross country teams earned a perfect rate for the 13th time in the 17-year history of the announcement of APR scores. it was the 11th consecutive perfect score for women's tennis and seventh in a row by the women's cross country team. Bluejay women's basketball was honored for the 11th overall time and ninth straight listing, while men's tennis, men's golf and softball each picked up their second consecutive accolades. The volleyball team earned its eighth overall score of 1000 and second straight. This year marks the fourth all-time perfect APR score for CU men's cross country, but first recognition since 2015-16. New to the listings for CU were men's track and women's track.
The current multi-year APR scores for Creighton's teams (2018-19 to 2021-22) are as follows: volleyball 1,000; women's track 1,000; women's tennis 1,000; women's cross country 1,000; women's basketball 1,000; softball 1,000; men's track 1,000; men's tennis 1,000; men's golf 1,000; men's cross country 1,000; rowing 998; men's soccer 993; women's soccer 988; women's golf 986; men's basketball 984 and baseball 969.
"Excellence is engrained in student-athletes — academically and athletically. Thousands of former student-athletes are returning to college to complete their degrees, further demonstrating the importance of higher education and exemplifying the fulfillment of earning a college degree," said Division I Committee on Academics Chair Robert Davies, president of Central Michigan.
The minimum APR academic standard for each team is 930. Typically, teams that scored below the benchmark would have to face penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics. However, due to the current penalty suspension in place, teams falling below the minimum 930 score will not be subjected to penalties this year. Normal Academic Performance Program operations with program penalties and loss of access to postseason competition will resume in spring 2024. This will also include the public recognition of high-performing teams.
Creighton's student-athletes owned a 3.50 cumulative GPA during the 2021-22 academic year.
