Huskies win rebound battle, and the game
STORRS, Conn. -- An 18-4 run spanning halftime by No. 1 UConn was too much to overcome as the host Huskies defeated No. 18 Creighton, 62-48, before a sold out crowd of 10,299 at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.
Connecticut improved to 16-2 (6-1 BIG EAST) while picking up just its second win in eight all-time meetings against Creighton (13-5, 4-3 BIG EAST).
The return of preseason All-American Donovan Clingan provided a spark for the Huskies, who unleashed an 11-2 run in his first 2:36 on the floor to force a Bluejay timeout after UConn's lead grew to 23-14. Baskets by Trey Alexander and Francisco Farabello helped CU narrow the gap to four (23-19) as Connecticut coach Dan Hurley called a timeout of his own. The Huskies kept up their defensive pressure, holding CU to one basket the rest of the half, to build a 32-21 lead at the intermission.
Steven Ashworth led CU with six points in the first half but saw limited action after picking up two fouls 44 seconds apart with 10:30 remaining. CU shot just 33.3 percent in the first half (9-27) and were 2-for-12 from distance (16.7 percent). Cam Spencer (11) and Tristen Newton (10) led UConn in scoring at the break, as the Huskies had a 26-16 rebound advantage and converted 12 offensive rebounds into 11 second chance points.
After closing the first half on a 9-2 run, the Huskies began the second stanza with a 16-7 burst and eventually led by as much as 22 (52-30). A 10-2 answer by Creighton, including five points from Ashworth, trimmed the deficit to 14 (54-40) with 3:45 left. The gap was cut to 10 (56-46) on Baylor Scheierman's 300th career three-pointer with 2:31 left, but the Huskies did enough down the stretch to get the victory.
Ashworth led Creighton with 14 points while Ryan Kalkbrenner contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots on his 22nd birthday. Kalkbrenner (710) moved into ninth place on Creighton's all-time rebounding list, passing Rick Apke (709). Creighton shot 34.6 percent from the field and 23.6 percent from deep, which offset a perfect night (6-6) at the charity stripe.
UConn was paced by 16 points and eight rebounds from Tristen Newton, while Spencer finished with 13 points. Alex Karaban bounced back from a scoreless first half to add 13 points, while Clingan finished with six points and five rebounds in 17 minutes. The Huskies owned a 48-32 rebound advantage turned 21 offensive rebounds into 19 points. The Huskies also held a 15-4 lead in points off turnovers. UConn shot 35.7 percent from the floor and 26.3 percent from deep but hit 7-of-10 foul shots.
Creighton is back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. Central when it visits BIG EAST co-leader Seton Hall (13-5, 6-1 BIG EAST) in a game that will be nationally-televised on FS and can be heard on 1620 The Zone and 101.9 The Keg.
