Omaha, Neb. -- Seniors Morgan Maly and Lauren Jensen supplied a combined 40 points to guide the offense, but it was the fourth quarter defense that turned the tide for #22 Creighton Women's Basketball as the Bluejays bested Marquette 76-71 on Wednesday, January 31.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 17-3 on the season and 8-2 in the BIG EAST, while Marquette fell to 16-5 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Creighton got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 9-2 lead (7:08) in the first three minutes. However after a timeout by Marquette head coach Megan Duffy, the Golden Eagles rallied to take a late first quarter lead. With the final possession of the frame, the Bluejays got a tip in from senior Jayme Horan to grab a 17-16 edge.
The second quarter saw both teams shoot 50% or better, with the Golden Eagles connecting on 10-of-15 shots as Marquette closed the half on a 5-0 burst to take a 40-37 advantage into the locker room.
Despite a pair of early lead changes Marquette turned a 45-45 contest into its largest lead at 51-45 (4:06). Creighton responded with consecutive buckets from seniors Molly Mogensen and a trey by Horan. Knotted at 54-54 in the final minute, Marquette pulled ahead once more with a step back jumper from the corner by Jordan King.
The first four minutes of the final frame saw the Bluejays feel the energy of their home crowd, going on another 9-2 to vault out to a 63-58 lead with 6:22 remaining. The next Creighton field goal was a critical three-pointer by Mogensen to extend the Bluejay advantage to 66-60 (5:34).
The defenses tightened as the next point in the game did not come until 2:46 remained on a layup by Marquette's Liza Karlen. Over the final two minutes Creighton went 10-of-12 from the free throw line to secure the win.
Maly led the Bluejays with 21 points in the victory, while Jensen finished with 19 points. Mogensen rounded out the Bluejays in double digits with 11 points.
