Creighton matches best start ever at 17-2
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 6 Creighton Volleyball team hit .446 and trailed for three total points in a 3-0 sweep over visiting DePaul on Sunday afternoon as part of the program's 17th Annual Pink Out. Scores in favor of CU were 25-18, 25-12, 25-13.
Creighton's (17-2, 8-0 BIG EAST) 10th straight win helped it match the best start in program history (17-2), and was its 25th in a row over DePaul (13-7, 5-3 BIG EAST). The Blue Demons came into the week 5-1 in BIG EAST play before losing in five sets at Marquette on Friday before today's setback.
Ava Martin led CU with 10 kills and Norah Sis matched her career-high with five aces as part of a big afternoon that saw CU serve a season-high 12 aces and outblock the Blue Demons 6-1. Creighton's .446 hitting percentage upped its season hitting percentage to .310, including an otherworldly .377 in league action.
Six different Bluejays had multiple kills in the opening set, a 25-18 victory. Martin had six of those terminations as CU hit .500 with 21 kills in 34 swings. Kendra Wait dished 15 assists to help hold off a DePaul unit that hit .407.
DePaul's lone lead came when it scored the first two points of the second set, only to have Creighton respond with the next two points to start a 16-3 run. Sis had four aces during that surge. CU went up 21-8 after a third straight DePaul attack error and took a 2-0 lead into intermission after a DePaul service error on set point. DePaul hit -.040 in 25 swings, while Destiny Ndam-Simpson was perfect in three swings on a big afternoon in her first start of the season.
The Bluejays blitzed to a 6-1 lead to open the final set, including one ace from Sydney Breissinger and two more by Martin, and were never threatened in the finale. Back-to-back blocks by Kiara Reinhardt and Kendra Wait gave CU a 20-10 lead, and a kill from Martin ended CU's seventh sweep in eight conference matches, and 21st sweep in its past 23 contests against league competition.
DePaul was led by 11 kills from Audrey Klemp. Jill Pressly entered the match leading the BIG EAST with 4.31 kills per set, but was held to a season-low six on .037 hitting. The Blue Demons hit .136 overall and did not record an ace.
Creighton returns to action with a road trip Georgetown and Seton Hall next weekend.
