
Men's Basketball Alums Ready To Start NBA Season

Trey Alexander and Baylor Scheierman join Doug McDermott
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball program will have three alums in action as the National Basketball Association season tips off this week. continuing a school tradition of Bluejays playing at pro basketball's highest level. Including 2024-25, Creighton has now had an NBA player in 41 of the last 42 years, and 58-of-61 seasons since 1964-65.
Doug McDermott is entering his 11th season in the NBA, and first with the Sacramento Kings after being signed last week. Both Trey Alexander and Baylor Scheierman will be making their professional debuts, Alexander with the Denver Nuggets and Scheierman with the defending champion Boston Celtics.
McDermott played at Creighton from 2010-14 and left as the most decorated men's basketball player in school history. He ranks seventh in NCAA history with 3,150 career points and swept 14 National Player of the Year awards as a senior. McDermott was a three-time conference player of the year and became the first male in 30 years to be named a First Team All-American three straight seasons by the Associated Press. McDermott was selected 11th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. Last season McDermott played 46 games for the San Antonio Spurs before being traded back to the Indiana Pacers for the final 18 games. He has averaged in double-figures in four of the past five seasons and now owns 5,851 career NBA points in 655 career games. He ranks 24th in NBA history with 41.0 percent marksmanship from three-point territory, and tied for 176th with 940 three-pointers made. McDermott has played for Chicago, Oklahoma City, New York, Dallas, Indiana and San Antonio during his first 10 years in the NBA. The son of Creighton head men's basketball coach Greg McDermott, Doug McDermott wears No. 7 for the Kings.
Alexander went undrafted but signed a two-way contract on July 3rd and will wear No. 23 for the Nuggets. The Oklahoma City native enjoyed three standout seasons at Creighton, finishing his career ranked 16th in CU history with 1,376 points after averaging 12.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 107 games. He is fifth in program history with 82.2 percent accuracy at the free throw line and earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors in 2023-24 after helping CU reach the Sweet 16.
Scheierman was the final pick in the First Round of the 2024 NBA Draft after closing his college career with two seasons at Creighton. He was named a Second Team All-American and unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2023-24, when he led the Bluejays with 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. He became the first men's player in Division I history to attain 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 three-pointers, and also became the 11th player to player to score 1,000 or more points at multiple Division I schools. Scheierman will wear No. 55 with the Celtics.
Once they make their debuts, Scheierman and Alexander will become the 17th and 18th former Creighton players to appear in an NBA game, and sixth after playing under Greg McDermott. Among the notable Bluejays to have extended NBA careers include Paul Silas, Benoit Benjamin, Anthony Tolliver and Kyle Korver.
