Bluejays' Win Sets Up Clash with #15 Connecticut on Monday
Queens, N.Y. -- Extending their win streak to 11 games, No. 20 Creighton WBB team delivered a dominant 71-51 win over St. John's on Friday, February 17.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 21-3 overall and 12-2 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's fell to 15-12 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
Down 5-2 in the opening moments, the Bluejays soared in front with eight straight points as seniors Emma Ronsiek and Lauren Jensen knocked down three pointers, then Ronsiek cashed a midrange jumper to make it 10-5 (6:07). Creighton pushed its lead to as much as 19-10 behind 10 first quarter points from Ronsiek, but settled for a 19-13 advantage as the game moved to the second.
In the first six minutes of the second frame the Bluejays surged out to a 34-15 lead (4:12) with a 15-2 run. All 15 points came from the duo of Jensen and fellow senior Morgan Maly, with eight coming from Jensen. St. John's chipped away before half as Creighton held a 36-23 lead heading into the locker room.
Early in the third quarter the Red Storm cut the Creighton edge to single digits twice, including down to eight points at 38-30 (7:44). Each threat was met by the Bluejays with either a trifecta or consecutive buckets as the contest moved to the final frame with CU holding a 54-43 edge.
Leading 59-46 with 7:37 remaining Creighton put the game away with 10 straight points to grab its largest lead of the game (23 points) at 69-46 (3:04).
Jensen and Maly led all scorers with 20 points, while Ronsiek finished with 14 points. St. John's got 16 points from Ber'Nyah Mayo and 11 from Jillian Archer in the loss.
The Bluejays win assured a clash of titans with No. 15 Connecticut as the Bluejays have won 11 straight and the Huskies are undefeated in the BIG EAST. Fittingly the game will be broadcast on FOX at 11 a.m. (CT) on Monday, February 19..
