OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton women's soccer freshmen Maia and Shani Sirota will be taking a brief break from the Bluejay soccer program and will travel back home to Israel this week as the duo has been called up to participate in the Israeli Women's National Team Training Camp.
"We are pleased for both Maia and Shani as it's a great opportunity for them both to represent their national team," said head coach Jimmy Walker. "Playing at the national team level is the pinnacle of your career and we are excited for them to compete and get into the squad for their upcoming European and World Cup games. We look forward to seeing how they do."
Maia and Shani will be making their first appearance with the Israeli National Team as they will be training with the squad over the next few weeks in preparation for its European Women's Championship qualifying match against Iceland on March 21.
"Being part of the Israeli women's national team while proudly representing Creighton fills me with immense pride," said Maia Sirota. "It's a constant reminder that my actions reflect not just myself, but also my school and there is truly no greater honor. It is exciting to represent the Creighton women's soccer program on the national stage and demonstrate its continued strength and development."
The dynamic duo has played for the Israeli youth national teams since 2017. During the 2018 season, they helped guide their squad to a U19 National Cup Title while combining to score 15 goals over the course of the year.
Being within the Israeli national team give me great pride and it gives me motivation to keep working hard," said Shani Sirota. "It is a responsibility and an honor to represent Creighton, because we are not only representing ourselves but also the school in a positive manner."
In their first season with the Creighton, the Sirota sisters contributed on both the Bluejays front and backlines. Shani appeared in 17 games last season, logging a combined 316 total minutes while netting one goal on four total shots. Maia, however, logged 1,076 total minutes in 17 matches along the Bluejays backline.
