Women’s Tennis Rides Early Momentum to Down Omaha, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team used early success in singles play after earning a hard-fought doubles point to notch a 5-2 victory over Omaha on Friday night at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 5-3 on the year with the win, while the Mavericks fell to 6-8 overall.
Creighton earned the first point of the night by winnings the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Junior Siri Kongara and sophomore Ana Paula Martinez started the action with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 slot. Omaha would then tie the doubles portion of the contest with a 6-3 victory at the top spot before sophomore Annika Elvestrom and freshman Elsa Jurren clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on the No. 3 court.
The Bluejays carried momentum into singles play, clinching the overall dual with straight-set win at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions.
Elvestrom continued her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the No. 5 spot, while junior Allison Wilcox claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win on the No. 6 singles court to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead.
Kongara would then clinch the overall dual with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over UNO's Keegan VanPelt on the No. 4 singles court.
Omaha did pick up a pair of win on the No. 1 and No.3 courts to cut the deficit to 4-2, before sophomore Valerie Negin closed the match with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-2 come-from-behind victory on court No. 2.
Creighton returns to the courts on Friday, March 1 for a battle with former Missouri Valley Conference rival Drake at 12:30 p.m. inside the Hanscom Tennis Center.
