Omaha, Neb. -- Continuing the slice through opposing pitching, Creighton Baseball claimed the series from Portland with a 9-2 in the opening game of a doubleheader on Sunday, March 10.
The win pushed Creighton to 11-1 on the season, while Portland dipped to 7-5.
The Bluejays burst out to 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run double from Ben North and a three-run blast by Matt Scherrman. Tate Gillen and Nolan Sailors worked walks to open the inning, advanced 90 feet on a long fly out from Teddy Deters and raced home on North's two-run double to left with two down in the frame. Connor Capece was hit by a pitch to extend the inning, then Scherrman made the most of the opportunity by launching a 2-1 pitch into the left field stands.
Creighton's offense added to the lead with two runs in the fourth as Gillen singled and Sailors reached on an error to set the table. Deters followed with an RBI single and North plated the Bluejays' seventh run on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Bluejay advantage grew to 9-0 with single runs in the sixth and seventh as North drove in his fourth run of the game with an RBI single down the left field line in the sixth and Will MacLean worked an RBI walk in the seven.
Portland scratched the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the eighth, when the game was in hand.
Creighton used three pitchers as starter Jimmy Burke worked four scoreless frames before handing the ball to Tommy Lamb. Crieghton's senior southpaw took the game through the eighth to collect the win (1-0), allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in four innings. Grad transfer Parker Primeaux closed the door with a scoreless ninth.
Portland starter Sam Stuhr took the loss (0-1), allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits and five walks over four innings.
North and Scherrman each closed the contest with two hits and seven combined RBI, four from North and three in the opening frame by Scherrman.
The two squads wrap up their three-game series later this afternoon with a seven-inning game expected to begin at approximately 3:45 p.m.
