Bluejays Build Drama, Then Deliver Eight-Run Ninth to Defeat Stanford 8-2

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Limited to four hits over the first eight innings, the Creighton offense didn't miss its chance in the ninth as the Bluejays plated eight runs on seven hits in the final frame to seize an 8-2 win over Stanford on Sunday, March 24.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 17-3 on the season, while Stanford fell to 9-11.
Down 1-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, Stanford closer Toran O'Harran allowed a leadoff single to Colby Canales, then a walk to Will MacLean to ignite the Bluejay attack. Hogan Helligso knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI double to left.
"Hogan's hit changed the game because Stanford was playing in for the bunt. We had the bunt called on the first pitch, but after I saw the corners pulled in, I took it off and Hogan connected on a ball that turned the tide," said head coach Ed Servais.
Creighton took the lead on the next play as Matt Scherrman lifted a foul ball down the first base line. Stanford's second baseman and first baseman collided as the ball was caught, creating an opportunity to take the lead. Creighton did just that as MacLean scampered home.
"The infielders were running away from the play. Our third base coach Connor Gandossy made the decision to take a chance and the way runs were difficult to come by, it was the right call," added Servais.
From there the flood gates opened as Ben North lined a sac fly to right, making it 3-1. After a single by Kyle Hess and a walk to Tate Gillen, Teddy Deters yanked a two-run triple into left-center. Nolan Sailors followed with an RBI single, then Jack Torosian and MacLean capped the frame with an RBI double and an RBI single.
Creighton allowed a solo home run in the ninth, but shut the door from there.
Malakai Vetock earned the win (2-0), allowing one run on one hit in 2.1 innings of relief, while O'Harran took the loss (0-2). He allowed five runs on three hits and two walks in one inning of work.
Deters, Helligso and Sailors each finished the game with two hits, while seven differnt Bluejays had at least one RBI.
