CU leads the state's Division I Universities with eight perfect APR scores
OMAHA, Neb. -- Eight Creighton programs have been recognized by the NCAA for having perfect multi-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores in their respective sports. Creighton's men's cross country, men's golf, men's tennis, men's track, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's track teams each were honored.
Creighton's eight perfect scores led the state's Division I Universities and trailed only Villanova (13) among its BIG EAST peers. Among BIG EAST institutions, only Villanova and Marquette owned a higher percentage of teams with a perfect APR score than Creighton's 50 percent.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. Each academic year, every Division I sports team's APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and 1 point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
The minimum APR academic standard for each team to avoid penalties is 930. In 2022, the Division I board approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties. After further review, the Committee on Academics is not enforcing the loss of access to postseason competition for teams that have scored lower than 930. Instead, a conditional waiver is being offered this year due to lingering impacts of COVID-19.
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 academic years.
Both the Creighton women's tennis and women's cross country teams earned a perfect rate for the 14th time in the 18-year history of the announcement of APR scores. it was the 12th consecutive perfect score for women's tennis and eighth in a row by the women's cross country team. Bluejay women's basketball was honored for the 12th overall time and 10th straight listing, while men's tennis and men's golf each picked up their third consecutive accolades. Men's cross country was recognized for the second season in a row and fifth time ever, while men's track and women's track both made the list for a second straight time.
The current multi-year APR scores for Creighton's teams (2019-20 to 2022-23) are as follows: women's track 1,000; women's tennis 1,000; women's cross country 1,000; women's basketball 1,000; men's track 1,000; men's tennis 1,000; men's golf 1,000; men's cross country 1,000; men's soccer 996; rowing 996; softball 996; men's basketball 995; volleyball 994; women's golf 985; women's soccer 985 and baseball's 974.
Dave Schnase, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs, said, "Student-athletes have achieved incredible success in the classroom over the last 20 years, mostly due to the hard work and commitment to academic achievement by student-athletes on campuses across the country."
Seven Bluejay teams earned public recognition awards from the NCAA for owning a multi-year APR in the Top 10 percent of its respective sport - men's basketball, men's cross country, men's golf, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's cross country and women's tennis. The seven public recognitions tie the most in Creighton history, something previously done in 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2014-15.
The average GPA of all of Creighton's athletic programs during the 2022-23 academic year was 3.50.
