Bluejay Men's Soccer Calms the Storm and Takes Down Tulsa 3-0

Omaha, Neb. -- In the last match before conference play, Creighton Men's Soccer was propelled by three first half goals to defeat Tulsa 3-0 on the first annual Cancer Awareness Night match on Saturday, September 14.
The victory advanced the Bluejays to 4-1-2 and the loss dropped the Golden Hurricanes to 1-4-1.Â
Creighton came out firing immediately as junior Roman Torres took advantage of an errant Tulsa pass near its own box. Torres beat his Hurricane defender to the ball, then chipped it over the goalie's head to net the first point of the match 48 seconds into play. The quick score marks the first goal of the season for Torres and the fastest goal to begin a match since Jackson Castro scored at the 37 second mark against San Diego State on Sept. 5, 2022.
The Bluejays followed up minutes later with another explosive play and struck again as Castro stole the ball off a Tulsa header and slid left of the goalie to laser the ball to the bottom right of the net in the 8th minute (7:36) to extend the lead to 2-0.Â
Creighton continued to capitalize offensively when Castro advanced the ball to junior Ryusei Shimonishi on the left side of the box where he dished a great pass to the center for sophomore Edward Morales. The Texas native used his left foot to strike perfectly with a goal of his own at the 27:40 mark. Morales' goal was also the first in his Creighton career and pushed the lead to 3-0 over the Golden Hurricanes. Â
The second half saw a new story as defensive play took control from both squads and no goals were earned in the second period. The lone opportunity arrived in the Bluejays favor as freshman Gavrilo Civric broke ahead from the pack into a one-on-one with the goalie and narrowly missed the shot, hitting the left post . Â
Creighton held an 11-10 advantage in shots and matched Tulsa in corners with 6 each.Â
In the net, Bluejays senior goalie Blake Gillingham had two saves and earned his second shutout of the season in back-to-back fashion. Gillingham is the first to goalie to have back-to-back shutouts since the BIG EAST Tournament in 2022, when the Bluejays bested Georgetown 3-0 and Seton Hall, 6-0.
Creighton will return to the pitch on Friday, September 20 to face Georgetown in their first BIG EAST match of the season in Morrison Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
