Men’s Tennis Seals 6-1 Victory Over Butler For First BIG EAST Win

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team avenged a loss in the BIG EAST Tournament last season to Butler with a 6-1 win over the Bulldogs on Sunday morning at the Hanscom Tennis Center for the Bluejays first BIG EAST win of the season.
Creighton improved to 8-2 on the year and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while Butler fell to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league action. The Bluejays also improved to 6-1 on the year at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
Wins at the top two doubles positions, guided the Bluejays to the doubles point for the seventh straight match. Senior Alejandro Gandini and sophomore Yuma Daijima picked up their fifth consecutive win with a 6-3 win on the No. 2 doubles court, before Butler claimed a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot. Senior Ethan Neil and freshman Rocky McKenzie then clinched the doubles point following a 6-4 triumph at the top doubles position.
In singles play, the Bluejays soared out to a 2-0 lead as McKenzie claimed a 6-3, 6-4 straight sets victory on the No. 5 singles court. Butler picked up their lone win of the match on the top singles court as Gandini retired from the match with an ankle injury.
Creighton would then secure the overall dual with straight set wins at the No. 6 and No. 2 doubles positions. Neil cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 singles spot, while Daijima clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win on the No. 2 singles spot.
Junior Zachary Kuo extended the Jays lead to 5-1 with a thrilling 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 three-set winner on the No. 3 court, before junior Kirtan Patel closed out the match with a 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 three-set win at the No. 4 singles court.
Creighton closes out its four-match homestand on Saturday, Feb. 22 against crosstown rival Omaha at 6 p.m.
