Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball Head Coach Mark Kingston announced the hiring of Will McGillis as Assistant Coach and LT Tolbert as the Director of Player Development on Friday, June 27.
McGillis played for Kingston at South Carolina during the 2023 season and spent four seasons at Southern Mississippi (2019-22). Following his collegiate career, McGillis signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He played two seasons in the Angels system, reaching as high as the high-A affiliate (Tri-City Dust Devils). This will be the first formal coaching role for McGillis, he played the 2023 season with the Gamecocks after transferring from Southern Miss. He played in 31 games with 29 starts and hit .313 with 29 runs scored, four doubles, 14 home runs and 30 RBI. He hit a pair of home runs on Opening Day in a win over UMass Lowell (Feb. 17), then broke a 5-5 tie with a home run in a win over Penn (Feb. 26). McGillis then hit two home runs in game one of the Gainesville Super Regional against Florida (June 9).
"I'm incredibly grateful and excited to join the Creighton family. Having the opportunity to reunite with Coach Kingston and Coach Current—this time as a member of the coaching staff—is truly special," said McGillis. "I'm eager to get to work with the outstanding student-athletes in our program."
Tolbert played for Kingston at South Carolina during the 2018 season, closing out three seasons with the Gamecocks. Tolbert was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 13th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, playing two seasons in the Diamondbacks system. He reached as high as AA, playing 31 games for the Jackson Generals in Tennessee. Tolbert played in 174 games for South Carolina, closing his career with a .282 average. He collected 181 hits and 115 RBI, with 14 HR, 24 doubles and six triples.Â
"I couldn't be more excited to accept this role with Creighton Baseball! I am looking forward to the opportunity to work alongside my former head coach and mentor Mark Kingston, assistant coach Mike Current, along with the rest of the excellent staff," said Tolbert. "Creighton Baseball has a rich tradition, and I can't wait to help add to it!"
"As my former players, I have first hand knowledge of the intelligence, work ethic, and feel for the game of both LT and Will. They were excellent student athletes who played in Super Regionals and professional baseball. More importantly, they were leaders that their teammates could always count upon," said Kingston. "They have the attributes necessary to be successful in college baseball, and their passion and relatability will serve our players extremely well. We are thrilled to add them to our program.Â
