CHICAGO, Ill. - The Creighton women's tennis team fell to DePaul, 7-0, in a BIG EAST conference match on Saturday afternoon at the XS Tennis Village in Chicago, Ill.
The Bluejays fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss, while the Blue Demons jumped to 3-2 on the year with the win.
"DePaul was too tough in all aspects today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "They came out on fire and we just were not competitive enough throughout the lineup. We have some things to work on and will start that next week and continue to improve."
DePaul came out of the gates strong, putting the pressure on the Bluejays in doubles play. Clara Nilsson and Hannah Smith picked up a 6-1 win over Ana Paula Martinez and Sophie Schwartz at the top doubles position, while Yasemin Pehlivan and Sasha Stula combined for an identical 6-1 victory over Annika Elvestrom and Olivia Minikel to clinch the first point of the match on the No. 2 doubles court.
In singles play, the Blue Demons claimed quick straight set victories on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles courts to secure the overall dual. Stula downed Schwartz, 6-3, 6-2 at the top singles spot, while Smith claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Martinez on the No. 2 singles court. Pehlivan then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Teresa Tran on the No. 4 singles court.
DePaul picked up additional wins at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles courts to complete the sweep of the Bluejays.
Creighton will reset and return to action on Friday, Feb. 6 at Drake at 4:30 p.m.
