SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Looking to clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, the Creighton women's soccer team fell to Seton Hall, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carrol Field in South Orange, N.J.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 7-7-3 on the year and to 3-4-2 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall improved to 7-2-6 overall and into a tie for third in the BIG EAST standings with a 3-2-4 league record.
Creighton controlled and dominated a majority of the possession in the opening 45 minutes of the match. The Bluejays outshot the Pirates, 6-2, in the first half, but were unable to push across the ahead goal as we headed to the break leveled in a scoreless battle.
Seton Hall would flip the script and ramp up their offensive pressure in the opening minutes of the second half, nearly taking a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute of play. Recovering a loss ball in the Pirates attacking third, Leyla Sanders eluded a Bluejay defender and lasered a shot off the right post before a kick save from junior goalkeeper Morgan Paley kept Seton Hall off the scoreboard.
The Pirates, however, broke the deadlock in the 66th minute (65:15) when Sabrina Campbell tapped in a loose ball right in front of goal for her first goal of the season to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.
Creighton pushed to find an equalizer down the stretch but had every scoring opportunity shut down by the Pirates defense, who secured their 11th shutout of the season
Both teams finished the match with seven shots, while Seton Hall closed with a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Creighton will return home with a chance to secure the final spot in the BIG EAST Tournament when they host DePaul in the regular season finale on Saturday, November 7 at 1 p.m.
