Softball Stays Hot Claiming Fifth Straight Win with Doubleheader Sweep of Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Timely hitting in game one and a two-hit shutout from freshman Ava Drehs in game two lifted the Bluejays to a pair of wins over Kansas City at the Urban Youth Academy in Kansas City, Mo. on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bluejays recorded a 6-2 victory in the opener, before cruising to a 9-0 two-hit shutout from Drehs in game two.
The two wins lifted Creighton's record to 11-14 on the year, while the Roos fell to 8-14 overall.
GAME 1: Creighton 6, Kansas City 2
Game one of the doubleheader saw the Bluejays surge out to a 6-0 lead, plating one run in the third and five runs in the fourth on the way to a 6-2 victory.
The Jays opened the third by putting runners on second and third as Ashten Pierson beat out a bunt single and Avery Barnard doubled down the left field time. One out later, Lily West delivered an RBI single up the middle to give CU a 1-0 lead.
Creighton would extend the lead in the fourth with RBI singles from Erika Perez and Zoey Greenwood as well as a dropped fly ball and a Roos throwing error to take a 5-0 lead, before an RBI groundout from West put the Jays out in front 6-0.
Kansas City answered with a run in the bottom half of the fourth on an RBI single from Leilani Bustamente, before adding an RBI single from Megan Johnson in the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Freshman Audrey Gilman earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. Perez led the way offensively with three hits and an RBI, while Avery Barnard added a pair of hits in the win.
GAME 2: Creighton 9, Kansas City 0
In game two, Drehs came out firing, striking out two on the way to posting a two-hit shutout in a 9-0 run-rule victory.
The Bluejays scored early and often as West gave the Jays a 2-0 lead in the first with an RBI double before coming around to score on a two-base throwing error.
CU would tack on two additional runs in the second as the Jays loaded the bases with back-to-back walks to Perez and Ella Dalton, as well as Chiqui Vazquez reaching on an error. Pierson and Barnard then delivered back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the Bluejays a 4-0 lead.
The Bluejays lead grew to 9-0 in the top of the fourth as the Bluejays played five runs on three hits, a walk and hit-by-pitch, and a Kansas City error. Greenwood scored two on a two-run double to left center, before stealing third and coming in to score on an RBI single from West to make the score 7-0. The Jays then scored two on a pass ball and a wild pitch to grab a 9-0 lead.
Drehs would close the door from there, securing her third win of the season.
Greenwood and West paced the team with a pair of hits as the Bluejays racked up seven hits in the contest.
After opening the season with 25 straight games away from home, the Bluejays are set to open the home portion of their schedule and the newly constructed Creighton Softball Stadium with a three-game series against Providence, beginning on Friday at 5 p.m.
