ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Xavier on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The loss moves the Bluejays to 10-4 on the year and 2-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers improved to 6-7 overall and 1-0 in league action.
Xavier earned the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. The Bluejays fell 6-2 on the top doubles court, before dropping an identical 6-2 decision on the No. 3 doubles court to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Xavier claimed victories on the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles courts to earn the 4-0 victory over the Bluejays. Madeleine Rexroat gave Xavier a 2-0 lead with a win on the no. 2 singles court and Creighton's Mithila Dixit was forced to retire due to an injury.
Ella DeFord followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Annika Elvestrom on the No. 4 singles courts, before Clara Owen's clinched the overall dual with a 6-4, 6-3 win on the No. 5 singles court.
"Xavier showed why they are the five-time defending champs of our league," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We had our moments but just not enough at the right times. We will hope to get good news on Mithila's injury early next week."
Creighton will wrap up its spring break trip to Florida on Thursday with a doubleheader against Calvin University and East Texas Baptist, beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
