Creighton improved to 26-21 on the year and 14-4 in BIG EAST play with its first ever sweep of St. John's, while the Red Storm fell to 27-19 overall and 6-12 in league action.
GAME 1: Creighton 11, St. John's 6
In game one, Creighton trailed 5-0 after the first inning but stormed back with a five-run third on the way to a x-x victory to clinch the series victory with a 11-6 win over the Johnnies.
St. John's struck first, taking advantage of three walks, a hit batter and three singles in the home half of the first inning to surge out to a 5-0 lead. A bases loaded hit-by-pitch from Elanna Lysiak put the Red Storm on the scoreboard, before a sacrifice fly from Cassidy Stouffer, a bases loaded walk from Makenna Meadows and a two-run RBI single from Alyssa Platero gave the Johnnies a 5-0 advantage.
Creighton answered right back, trimming the deficit to 5-1 as junior Kaelan Schultz led off the top of the second with a solo shot, her sixth home run of the season, to deep left center field.
The Bluejays completed their comeback in the third, scoring five runs on three hits and two walks. Junior Ashten Pierson set the table for the big inning, drawing a four-pitch walk to leadoff the frame. She then stole second before coming in to score on an RBI single to right center from senior Lily West. A walk to Schultz put runners on first and second for Vandewater, who laced an RBI single down the left field line to make it 5-3. Freshman Keegan Mayhue then delivered in a big way, crushing a three-run homer to left, her team-leading 11th home run of the season, to give the Jays its first lead of the game at 6-5.
St. John's responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Stouffer to level the contest at 6-6.
Creighton, however, reclaimed the lead in the next half inning as the Bluejays loaded the bases with three straight singles from Greenwood, West and Schultz before an opposition field grand slam from Vandewater put Creighton out in front for game at 10-6.
CU would tack on an additional run on an RBI double from Vanderwater in the sixth to secure the 11-6 victory.
Vandewater led the potent Creighton offense with a career day, going 3-for-4, falling a triple shy of the cycle, while collecting a career-high six RBI and two runs scored. Greenwood, West and Schultz each added in two hits apiece, while Mayhue recorded three RBI on a home run and two walks.
Sophomore Landrie Harris collected the win (4-3), limiting St. John's to one run on six hits with three strikeouts in a season-long 6.1 innings of flawless relief. St. John's Loreley Francia took the loss (13-8), allowing eight runs on seven hits and three walks in 4.0 innings of work.
GAME 2: Creighton 13, St. John's 6
Creighton never trailed in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring four in the first, three in the second, one in the fifth and sixth and four more in the seventh on the way to completing the series sweep with a 13-6 victory.
The Bluejays soared out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings of play. Junior Avery Barnard opened the game with a single to left and scored three batters later an RBI single from Schultz as CU took a 1-0 lead. Vandewater continued her hot hitting, launching a three-run home run to straight away center to push the advantage to 4-0.
CU tacked on three more in the top of the second as Greenwood and Schultz each delivered RBI singles and West scored on a St. John's wild pitch.
St. John's placed their first dent on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, using three consecutive singles from Ana Serafinko, Stouffer and Elanna Lysiak to cut the deficit to 7-1.
Creighton would regain their seven-run advantage in the fifth when Schultz laced a leadoff double to left and pinch runner Lynn Davis came around to score following a single from Vandewater and an RBI groundout from Perez to make it 8-1.
The Red Storm answered right back with an RBI single from Natasha Limbani in the home half of the fifth, before West delivered an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to put the Jays out in front 9-2.
Creighton was not done yet, scoring four additional runs in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded walk from Pierson, a two-run single from Barnard and a pass ball to extend the lead to 13-2.
St. John's, however, would not go away quietly, plating four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the frame, but it wasn't enough as freshman Audrey Gilman closed out the 13-6 victory.
Gilman recorded her 13th win of the season, striking out five in her second complete-game effort of the weekend. Schultz led the way offensively with three hits, while Vandewater added two hits and three more RBI in the win. In addition, Barnard and Perez each collected two hits in the victory.
The Bluejays will take six days off before returning to the east coast for another crucial BIG EAST series at UConn. The Bluejays and Huskies will open their three-game set on Friday, April 24 in Storrs, Conn at 6 p.m. Central.
