Greg Grensing
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Greg Grensing is in his 11th season on the Creighton men’s basketball coaching staff and first as the associate head coach. He is a loyal disciple to CU head coach Dana Altman and his philosophies.
The partnership between Grensing and Altman goes back to 1986-87 when they started three seasons of work as assistant coaches under Lon Kruger at Kansas State.
When Altman returned from a one-year head coaching position at Marshall to replace Kruger at Kansas State in 1990, Grensing remained in Manhattan as a member of Altman’s new staff and has worked with Altman the past 14 seasons at Kansas State and Creighton.
In the 17 years Grensing and Altman have worked together, their teams have gone a combined 327-194 (.628) and made nine NCAA Tournament and four National Invitation Tournament appearances.
Since arriving at Creighton, Grensing has served as the program’s recruiting coordinator, helping to identify, evaluate and attract potential student-athletes to Omaha. While those recruits have served as the nucleus of seven consecutive postseason teams on the court, Creighton is also in select company as a school with an Academic All-District selection in seven straight years as well.
The 46-year-old native of Council Grove, Kan., graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and began his coaching career with a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at his alma mater.
In 1981, after receiving his master’s degree in physical education from Southwest Texas State, Grensing moved on for one season as an assistant at Laredo (Texas) Junior College, and then spent two years as an assistant at Idaho State from 1982-84.
Following the 1983-84 season, Grensing joined head coach Lon Kruger’s staff at Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas. After serving two years at Pan American, Kruger was named head coach at Kansas State and Grensing joined current Creighton head coach Dana Altman as an assistant on Kruger’s staff.
Grensing started his playing career as a guard at Independence (Kan.) Community College, helping the Pirates to a 62-6 record and the 1977 national title as the team’s sixth man.
Following the 1977 season, Grensing transferred to Southwest Texas State and led the Bobcats to a 49-13 record in two seasons, including a third-place finish in the 1979 NAIA national tournament.
Grensing is married to the former Michelle Thaemert, and they have two daughters, Aubrey Marie (9) and Gentry (8). Coach Grensing also has one son, 32-year-old Justin.
