NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Brian Biggerstaff's first collegiate goal led the Creighton men's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Vanderbilt on Friday night. The win is the Bluejays' third consecutive Missouri Valley Conference win, improving to 3-0-1 in conference play while securing their first overtime win in five tries this season.
Biggerstaff, a redshirt sophomore, netted his first career goal with just under four minutes remaining in the match, ending the game at 106:37. The game-winner came from about 10 yards out, sailing into the upper right corner of the net to beat Vanderbilt goalkeeper Jamie Burns.
“Vanderbilt played great in the first half and their goalkeeper was unbelievable all night,” Head Coach Bob Warming said after the win. “I thought in the second half we put the most pressure on a team we have all year. Our boys played hard tonight and deserved a win. I was just glad to see us finally come up with a goal when we needed it.”
The Bluejays (6-3-3, 3-0-1 MVC) played from behind most of the match after allowing Vanderbilt (3-6-4, 0-3-1 MVC) to tally the first goal of the night in the 13th minute of play. Jamie Gilbert netted VU's goal after a Guido Leon save.
CU didn't score the equalizer until just under four minutes remaining in regulation. Brett Rodriguez scored his first goal of the year, a shot from 18 yards out at 86:21. The goal was Rodriguez's second career tally, his other also coming against the Commodores, on Oct. 13, 2002.
The Jays have now scored 14 goals this season, with 12 different players finding the back of the net. The Commodores goal against CU was the first allowed by the Jays in conference play this year, while also serving as VU's first tally in league play. The VU goal snapped CU's shutout streak at 374 minutes and 20 seconds.
CU upped its all-time mark against Vanderbilt to 6-0-1 in seven meetings. The Jays took a season-high 13 corner kicks in the victory, while out-shooting VU 20-12 on the night, including a 10-4 edge in the second half.
Creighton returns to MVC play on Sunday when it travels to Bowling Green, Ky., to face off with Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. CU will look to improve upon its 7-0-0 all-time record against the Hilltoppers.
