LOS ANGELES - For the second consecutive Friday, the 12th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team tied its opponent with a 0-0 final. The Bluejays tied Santa Clara on Friday afternoon in the first match of the Loyola Marymount Fall Classic in Los Angeles.
The Bluejays (1-0-2) and Broncos (2-0-1) got locked into a hard-fought physical match which resulted in a defensive struggle for both teams. With neither team wanting to allow attackers behind them, the Broncos edged the Jays in shots, 14-9. Five of the Jays' nine shots were on goal, while eight Bronco shots found their way on net.
“I thought Santa Clara was a very well organized team, set up in the same formation as us, and we were very evenly matched,” Head Coach Bob Warming said after the match. “Their goalkeeper made some big saves to keep them in the match, as did Guido (Leon) for us.”
Senior goalkeeper Guido Leon stopped eight shots on the evening, including four in the second half and two in the second overtime, for this second shutout in three matches this season.
Freshman Jarod Tarver and junior Julian Nash topped the Jays with three shots each. Jeff Scott of SCU, ranked No. 15 by Soccer America this week, led all players with six shots, four on goal.
The scoreless tie was the 12th in CU men's soccer history and it marks just the second time the Jays have played to two 0-0 ties in one season. The Bluejays last had two scoreless ties in a season in 1996, including a four overtime 0-0 match against Cal State Fullerton in the NCAA Tournament (CU advanced on penalty kicks).
The Jays will look to get their offense back in gear for Sunday's match, when they play the host Loyola Marymount Lions. The Lions battled MVC foe, SMU, in the second match on Friday. The Jays and Lions take the pitch at 4:00 p.m. (CST) on Sunday. Follow the game with live stats here.
