OMAHA, Neb. Brian Biggerstaff scored a pair of goals and assisted on another as the eighth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team defeated Vanderbilt 3-1 on Friday night at the newly dedicated Michael G. Morrison, S.J., Stadium in Omaha. The junior scored both of his goals in the first 10 minutes of the match and assisted Julian Nash's fifth goal of the year early in the second half to help the Bluejays improve to 10-2-0 on the season and 4-1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Biggerstaff scored his first goal of the night when his long distance shot glanced off the head of a Vanderbilt (6-6-1, 2-3-0 MVC) defender and into the back of the net at the 5:31 mark. Kama Bennah was credited with an assist. ?Biggs? then scissor kicked a crossing pass from Nash into the net exactly four minutes later. His fifth goal of the season establishes a career-high for the junior from Lincoln, Neb.
The Commodores cut the CU lead in half before heading into halftime. One of the Valley's top offensive threats, John Krause, unleashed a shot from the top of the box and beat a diving Zac Gibbens for VU's lone tally of the match in the 28th minute, his 10th score of the year. The 20-yard blast tipped off of Gibbens' fingers and into the net.
Nash then equalled Biggerstaff for the team-lead with his fifth goal of the season just over two minutes into the second half. Nash took a nice through ball from Biggerstaff on the left and bombed a perfectly placed strike across the net and into the top right corner to beat VU goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni.
Bluejay freshman keepers, Gibbens and Matt Allen, split goalkeeping duties in the win. Gibbens earned the win, playing the first half and stopping one shot, while allowing his first goal of the year. Allen made three saves in a scoreless second half.
Schoeni stopped nine shots, while allowing three Bluejays goals, in net for the Commodores.
The Bluejays out-shot the Commodores 23-15 and owned a edge in corner kicks, 7-1. CU improved to 7-0-1 all-time against Vanderbilt with the win, out-scoring the Commodores 27-5 in those eight meetings.
CU returns to action on Sunday when the Jays play host to Western Kentucky at noon. The Hilltoppers lost a 1-0 decision to Drake on Friday night to fall to 5-8-0 and 1-4-0 in the MVC. Morrison Stadium is located at 19th and California in downtown Omaha.
