WASHINGTON, D.C. Creighton scored a season-high six goals as the 15th-ranked Bluejays romped Georgetown 6-0 Wednesday afternoon in the nation's capital. The six-goal explosion marked the highest-scoring game by the Bluejays since 2003. The Jays improve to 8-2-3 with the win, dropping the Hoyas to 8-7-0.
CU wasted little time in taking control of the match, scoring just 2:05 into the game when Brian Biggerstaff knocked in a header off a corner kick from Tim Bohnenkamp. Bohnenkamp had two assists in the match, marking the first time in the sophomore's career he recorded a point away from Omaha. He now has 19 career points (4 goals, 11 assists), with his first 17 career points coming at Morrison Stadium.
The Jays scored again in the fifth minute, when Matt Wieland scored his first goal of the season off a feed from Tony Schmitz. Ryan Junge scored his third goal of the year with just seven seconds left in the first half to give CU a 3-0 lead at halftime. Joan Carvajal was credited with an assist on Junge's score.
After the break, the Bluejays continued their offensive onslaught beginning in the 48th minute. Jarod Tarver and Biggerstaff hooked up for the fourth score of the match, with Tarver knocking in his fourth goal of the season.
Wieland, who knotched his first point of the year on Saturday, then found the back of the net again in the 68th minute for the first two-goal match of his career. The senior turned in a dazzling bicycle kick goal for his sixth career tally. Freshman Byron Dacy scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 73rd minute, with an assist from Trevor Eastman to conclude scoring.
The blowout allowed the Jays to play backup goalkeeper Zac Gibbens for the first time this year, ending Matt Allen's streak of every minute played in net this year. The pair of sophomore keepers combined for CU's fifth shutout of the season, and third in its last four games.
The Bluejays have now scored 16 goals in their last four games after suffering through a stretch which they scored only three goals in five games. The Jays last scored six goals in a match in a 6-0 shutout of UMKC in the NCAA Tournament, Nov. 22, 2003. CU last scored six goals in a road match on Dec. 8, 2002 at Boston College (6-2) in the NCAA postseason.
Creighton returns to Missouri Valley Conference play at Western Kentucky Saturday night. The first-place Bluejays and Hilltoppers will kick off at 7 p.m.
