DES MOINES,
Baker got the scoring started in the sixth minute when he knocked in a rebound off a free kick play. Baker converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead heading into the half. Drake (6-8-2, 2-2-1 MVC) held a 9-3 shots advantage in the first half.
The Bluejays cut the lead in half in the 72nd minute when senior Matt Wieland found the back of the net for the third time this season. His tally was assisted by Tyler Stansberry.
Drake responded with Baker's third goal of the night in the 75th minute to give the Dogs a 3-1 edge. Baker's hat trick marks just the second time in CU history an opponent has scored three goals against the Bluejays, as he joins Marquette's Marshall Morehead (Sept. 24, 2000) in that category.
Creighton added a late tally to pull the Jays within one. Ryan Junge's fourth goal of the year in the 87th minute made the game close, but it was too little, too late for the Bluejays. Junior Andrew Peterson recorded is first point of the season with an assist on the Jays' second goal. CU's offense tried to mount a comeback, out-shooting DU 12-5 in the second half and 15-14 for the match.
Matt Allen suffered the loss in net for CU, as he allowed a season-high three goals while stopping five shots in the match. Drake's Phillip Breuer stopped eight CU shots in goal for the Bulldogs.
The loss to the Bulldogs marked a first in program history, as the Jays owned an 18-0-5 record all-time against DU prior to Wednesday night's meeting. CU's second straight one-goal road MVC loss was another tough defeat, as the Jays entered last Saturday's match against Western Kentucky, 9-0-0 all-time against the Hilltoppers before suffering a 1-0 defeat.
The Jays continue a season of ups and downs, after starting the year 4-0-1 they endured a four-game winless stretch (0-2-2). CU then rebounded with a four-match winning streak, out-scoring their opponents 16-2 in that span, before its current two-game skid.
CU will look to get back in the win column with another road contest at
