OMAHA, Neb.- The Creighton women's soccer team was defeated by UNLV in the final match of the Bluejay Classic at Morrison Stadium on Sunday afternoon 1-0. UNLV captured the Bluejay Classic title, Creighton was second followed by North Dakota State and Grambling State. This is the second year in a row that the Jays have not scored against UNLV.
Creighton had several opportunities to score but was denied by UNLV goalkeeper Ciera Nero. Nero had seven saves on the afternoon.
The loss comes on the heels of Friday's 3-0 win against Grambling State, marking the first time all season that Creighton had scored three goals in a contest.
The Rebels (4-4-2) jumped on top early in the first half against the Jays. Tanya Roberts found a way to get the ball past CU goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer. It was Roberts first goal of the season and she did it in the13th minute mark to put UNLV up 1-0.
The Jays entered the second half with more aggressive play but could not capitalize on the seven shots on goal that they put up.
"We ended with a better second half than a first half, we were reacting to UNLV and forced to chase," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We had a couple of chances in the end but could not finish."
Zimmerer (2-1-0) was in the net for the third time this season and dropped her first match. She had three saves on the afternoon.
The Jays fall to 5-5-1 and have one more non-conference match on Friday at Morrison Stadium versus Kansas before the start of conference. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. In the earlier match on the final day of the Bluejay Classic, North Dakota State defeated Grambling State, 1-0.
